Arduino in Children’s Museum Exhibit “Put Out The Fire”

Ever wonder how they make those interactive exhibits at Museums? It should come as no surprise that you’ll find Arduino used in Children’s Museum Exhibits the world over.

You’re probably not shocked to learn that tons of exhibit designs are now using Arduino to create fun and interactive experiences.

This project was submitted by our academy member Marc Hudson.  Marc is an exhibit design & development manager at the Children’s Museum of Denver.

From Marc: This exhibit is called Put Out The Fire and it utilizes a photo-resistor in each window and a flashlight in the “firehose” to put out each fire. If you get all four fires to go out within 5 seconds a light celebration is triggered. This was the first project I was able to put my Arduino knowledge to the test for a fun children’s exhibit.

Honestly, the courses were fantastic. In just a couple weeks I went from very little electronics knowledge (just simple circuits like a lightbulb or a sensor and a solenoid) to being able to program and build projects that I thought would’ve taken much more time to learn.

I love how each module is essentially just an individual course in and of itself that builds upon the previous ones. It feels like I could go back and reference any of them individually without feeling like I need to do the one before or after it which is incredibly valuable.

I’ve also kept all of the IDE files that I made throughout the courses. This as well as the included PDF have proven to be seriously invaluable resources that have become my number one reference for when I’m building something with Arduino.
